Bathroom floors work harder than floors in almost any other room in your home. They face splashes, steam, frequent cleaning and daily foot traffic, and they still need to look good doing it.
The good news is that today’s bathroom flooring can balance durability, comfort, style and budget better than ever.
So which one is right for your remodel? We looked at national remodeling trends, recommendations from major flooring manufacturers and the products we carry here at Palouse Floors to narrow it down to five popular options.
If you want a floor built to last for years, porcelain tile is hard to beat.
According to Houzz’s 2025 U.S. Bathroom Trends Study, porcelain is the most popular flooring material in remodeled bathrooms, chosen by 39% of homeowners for the floor outside the shower.
There’s a practical reason for that popularity. According to Daltile, porcelain absorbs 0.5% of water or less, which makes it especially well suited to bathrooms and other damp spaces.
It’s versatile, too, with designs that recreate the look of natural stone, wood or concrete.
Consider porcelain if: water resistance, durability and long-term value are your top priorities.
Luxury vinyl has become one of the most versatile alternatives to traditional bathroom tile.
Luxury vinyl plank (LVP) gives you the look of hardwood without putting real wood in a room full of moisture. Luxury vinyl tile (LVT) does the same for stone and tile patterns, with a softer, warmer feel underfoot than ceramic or porcelain.
We carry vinyl flooring from Mohawk, Shaw Floors, Engineered Floors and Happy Feet, with options ranging from wood-look planks to stone-inspired tile.
Water performance varies by product, so for bathrooms we’ll point you toward waterproof options, such as Mohawk’s waterproof vinyl lines.
Consider LVP or LVT if: you want waterproof or water-resistant performance with more warmth and comfort than traditional tile.
Ceramic tile is a bathroom classic for good reason.
In the Houzz study, ceramic was the second-most-popular bathroom flooring material at 26%, right behind porcelain.
Ceramic and porcelain share many of the same benefits, including easy cleaning, durability and an enormous range of designs. That’s why we recommend both for wet and high-traffic spaces.
The main difference is that porcelain is denser and less porous. Ceramic can be a more budget-friendly way to get the look and durability of traditional tile without stepping up to porcelain.
Consider ceramic if: you love the look of traditional tile and want to balance performance, design and budget.
Sheet vinyl doesn’t get as much attention as luxury vinyl plank, but it has some real advantages in a bathroom.
Instead of individual planks or tiles, sheet vinyl covers the floor in large, continuous sections. Fewer seams mean fewer places for water to work its way between pieces of flooring.
It’s also easy to maintain and cost-effective. We offer sheet vinyl from Mohawk and Shaw Floors, including Mohawk VersaTech Plus and Shaw DuraTru, and we often recommend it for water-prone areas like bathrooms, kitchens and laundry rooms. Sheet vinyl also stays comfortable underfoot year-round, without the chill of tile on a Palouse winter morning.
It’s a practical pick for rentals, guest bathrooms and budget-conscious remodels.
Consider sheet vinyl if: affordability, easy cleaning and moisture resistance are at the top of your list.
For a bathroom with a one-of-a-kind finish, natural stone remains a premium choice. Marble ranked third in the Houzz study, chosen by 8% of homeowners for their bathroom floors.
Marble, travertine, granite and other natural stones have variations that manufactured flooring tries to imitate but can’t fully duplicate. No two installations look exactly alike.
The tradeoff is maintenance. Daltile strongly recommends sealing natural stone, especially newly installed marble, granite and limestone, to help protect it from staining. Stone also needs the right cleaning products, since acidic cleaners can damage some materials.
Natural stone isn’t the right fit for every household, but if you’re willing to give it a little extra care, you’ll get a floor with a timeless, high-end look.
Consider natural stone if: a unique look and premium materials matter more to you than keeping maintenance to a minimum.
There’s no single bathroom floor that’s best for every remodel.
Porcelain offers exceptional water resistance and durability. Luxury vinyl pairs moisture protection with wood- and stone-inspired designs. Ceramic delivers the familiar benefits of tile at a friendly price point. Sheet vinyl offers simple, dependable value, while natural stone brings a distinctive premium finish.
The right choice comes down to your budget, how much moisture the room sees, how much upkeep you want and how you want the finished room to look.
